Sony didn’t invent downloadable games, and Microsoft has been selling games from independent studios through Xbox Live Arcade since the console was first released. But when six of the seven PlayStation Network (PSN) titles being showcased are as exciting as nearly any full-price console game at the show, Sony is doing something right.

Nearly all of the PSN demos were either gorgeous to watch, stripped down to raw and refined gameplay or pushing the artistic limits of gaming. And some were doing a combination of all three. These are the kinds of experimental games that could finally define the PS3 as its own, sophisticated brand
If Sony can create a true safe haven for open-minded, independent game designers, it could be the best thing to happen to the industry since Pong.

LittleBigPlanet is a lot like the Wii—when first you hear about it, it sounds ridiculous. Your play a tiny, child-like character who looks like something a grade school student would cobble together with cloth and Elmer’s Glue. And you waddle and leap through levels filled with motorized wooden hands, stuffed denim dragons, and whatever else has been created by other users. It’s YouTube meets Super Mario Bros. meets . . . well, something that’s never really been done before.
